My Daughter’s Wedding

Posted on February 19, 2009 - Filed Under Pulskamps Today

Our youngest child, Rebecca, got married at our home on Saturday, September 27, 2008. This photo is our favorite one. Rebecca designed and made her dress and made the skirt for Jennifer and a similar one for her new sister-in-law. (Not shown in this photo.)

Photo shows our son Benjamin on the left, his wife Megan Robertson near him, my Mom Kay Pulskamp in front, the bride Rebecca, her wonderful groom Paul Howarth, myself (Ellen Pulskamp Turner), my husband Ray, and our eldest child Jennifer.

Since these kids have no particular church affiliation, my Mom presided at the wedding, which was really wonderful. The ceremony was on the west yard, overlooking Silicon Valley, followed by wine and appetizers around the pool in the courtyard. A lovely dinner was then served in the tennis court. The kids made all the decor themselves and everything was perfect. rebeccapaulweddingfamily

The Pulskamp Poll 2008

Posted on December 1, 2008 - Filed Under Family history, Pulskamps Today, World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps

As you may recall, if you were at the World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps, Birgit Pulskamp from Germany gave us a little poll to fill out. The following are the results of that poll. I don’t know how many Pulskamps completed the form, but it provides an interesting bit of information about our wonderful family. Enjoy!

********************************

Dear all,
Here are some interesting and funny results of the official “Pulskamp Poll 2008” which was done during the World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps in Cincinnati in August 2008:

The total average-Pulskamp-woman in 2008 is 1,65 metres high, with a weight of 68 kg.

The total average-Pulskamp-man is 1,83 metres high with a weight of 90 kg.
The heaviest Pulskamp weighs 139 kg, the smallest 8 kg .
On average, the Pulskamps seem to be in very good shape and are very sportive!

On average 38 % of the Pulskamps have blue eyes, 36 % brown eyes.

45 % of the Pulskamps have brown hair and 40 % grey hair (!) – oh, yes the Pulskamps
are becoming very old.

The oldest participant at the world gathering was 96 years old, the youngest 6 months.
Most Pulskamps are born in June (13 %) or January, February and October (10 %).

The Pulskamps are real individuals – there are only John, Kay, Mary Jane and Kathleen Pulskamp whose name exist two times in the poll. All other first names are individual names – so far only once in the world.

The Pulskamps are very international – 72 % of the Pulskamps have been in Europe before. 58 % have been in Germany before. Hopefully this number will be increased in the next years!

The Pulskamps are Rocker or Country Singers – 28 % of the Pulskamps like Rock & Roll as their favorite music style, 26 % Country music.

The favorite ice creams of the Pulskamps are Chocolate (37%) and Vanilla (26%).
The favorite sports of the Pulskamps are American Football (26%), Basketball (16%) and Baseball (12%).

The key/best experiences for the Pulskamps in 2008 according to the poll have been:

1. Visiting their own family and having fun together.
2. Going for holidays.
3. Buying the Pulskamp Farm (Thanks Barry! Well done!).
4. Managing to get a year older/still breathing/I’m still here.

The “craziest” Pulskamp experiences in 2008 have been e.g.:

1. To organize a World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps (Thanks Ellen and family – great job!)/The World Wide Gathering/Reunion
2. To figure out how over 200 Pulskamps are related (and to print this out correctly – thanks Jennifer, well done!).
3. Being close with bears during a vacation in the west.
4. Marrying into this Family/Marrying a Pulskamp with a great sense of humor.

47 % of the Pulskamp World Gathering visitors were coming from 100 miles and less to Cincinnati, 28 % were arriving from up to 1.000 miles, 7% from up-to 2.000 miles and six people were coming from overseas with more than 4.000 miles (7.000 km) from Germany.

Thanks to all participants in the official Pulskamp poll 2008 – see you at the next World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps, maybe in Germany………where everything started.

Best regards from Germany
Birgit, Elfriede, Georg and Volker

Hi Ellen, Hope your world is back to normal, whatever that is. We still find
ourselves taking about the reunion, whether people want to hear about it or
not. It was fantastic!

I have a problem. I’m trying to track down an aunt and her children. My dad
was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Spieler) Pulskamp from Celina OH. He
had a sister Elizabeth (Betty) who married Roy Campbell Jr. They had several
daughters and lived in Columbus OH. Roy died sometime in the early eighties.
We haven’t heard anything from anyone since. The girls all married and we
don’t have a clue what their married names are. Wondering if anyone has a
family tree that may show that linage and who the girls married. Also does
anyone know if Betty is still living.

Maybe you can stick this on the web site and see if anyone responds.

Thanks for everything, and may God Bless You, many times over!

Email and Link to Photos from the World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps

I received the email below and publish it here with permission:

Hello Pulskamps!!

Just a note to send all of you links to my “Picasa” albums page where I have 3 albums of photos from the recent Pulskamp World Reunion, each corresponding to a different aspect of our visit.  Now don’t get too excited.  You are getting field run here.  No edits, very few deletions, and done by a rank amateur to boot, so there are some really bad shots, but hey, ya gotta admit, the price is right ;^)

Sorry about the three links.  If my brain had actually been functioning at the time I uploaded these pictures I would have done a single album.  But what’s done is done.

I would appreciate any input you can give me as far as people identification in some of these shots.  I tried to do some that I was relatively confident in (and even some of those could be wrong) but there is ample opportunity for input as far as captioning.

I really found the reunion to be an invaluable insight into what for me was an almost invisible part of my heritage.  For that I thank all of those who pulled this together.

With that, here are the links:

Wonderful Weekend: World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps

Posted on August 7, 2008 - Filed Under Family history, Pulskamps Today, World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps

The first photos of the World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps are in! Check out the photo gallery by clicking on the tab at the top of the page (Pulskamp Photo Gallery), which will take you to another page. Then click on the words “Pulskamp Photo Gallery” again on that page. That will take you to the Gallery itself where you can explore the photos we have so far.

Please send us your photos or ask me how you can load them directly into the Gallery, so the whole family can enjoy them.

Eventually, I will post the family tree, but I want to make all the corrections and additions first. Plus, they will be posted to a site that will require a password so only family members can see that information. That is important because identity theft is such a problem these days and knowing your mother’s maiden name could be part of that process. It will take me some time to get that set up, so please be patient. Meanwhile, enjoy these photos.

Exciting Trip Home

Posted on August 6, 2008 - Filed Under Pulskamps Today, World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps

Well, we finally got home from the World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps. What an adventure! The weekend was incredibly wonderful! Awesome cousins! Great food! Fantastic weather! Super conversations! Photos, mementos, an awesome PowerPoint presentation by the German Pulskamps, and hayrides too! We got to visit the original Pulskamp farmstead, the current Pulskamp farms, Oldenburg, and St. Marys-of-the-Rock where we celebrated a lovely Eucharistic liturgy with outstanding a capella singing.

Our group got to go to the Freedom Center (Underground Railroad Museum), the museums at Union Terminal, the Cincinnati Conservatory, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and stopped by my grandfather’s childhood home on Young Street. That house is not in the best of shape, though the brickwork looks okay, the woodwork is severely damaged. It looks vacant. In a few years, the area will be yuppie-fied and perhaps that house will survive. Maybe I’ll win the lottery?

Getting home to California was a bit of a challenge. Going through airport security with my Mom is always fun, since she has a couple of metal pins in her hip and knee. Jennifer had an additional challenge as the German Pulskamps had given her a package with instructions not to open it until they arrive in California. TSA needed to open it. Lucky for us, the agent she got at the Cincinnati Airport has a friend from Ettlingen, Germany, so he understood the package, and after opening it, let her take it on the plane. Then we go to O’Hare Airport in Chicago and things got interesting.

We had two hours to wait, so we were not rushed at all, but then the tornado hit town and everything changed. O’Hare Airport emergency plan seems pretty non-existent. First, all the American Airlines employees disappeared without telling us why. Then a single person with a clipboard came by and told us to move away from the windows and go to the food court. The public announcement speakers continued to tell us not to smoke and to park in the right places. We moved Mom’s wheelchair toward the food court, but it was mobbed. Then we heard an announcement that everyone should proceed to the basement. We started moving that direction, but first had to buy Mom a very large sweatshirt to put on over her jacket and a blanket to help her get warm again. The air conditioner was still on stun. The store clerks couldn’t decide if they were supposed to close or not. We started moving again, but then Jennifer spotted a family bathroom and we ducked in there. The theory was that the bathroom, in the center of the building, was a safe place during a tornado. We had a toilet, a sink, and an emergency telephone. We settled in. We also called our son in Seattle and our other daugther in California to see if they could give us any information. Rebecca was able to tell us how the storm was moving along. We also listened to the people in the hall outside, but we did not open the door when folks tried to get in. People never did leave the hallway outside. Eventually, the public announcement came on and gave the all-clear and we joined everyone outside.

At least, we thought, we didn’t have to go through security again with ten thousand other passengers. Then we needed to figure out how to get home. We found that our plane was still in St. Louis and our flight was canceled.  Ray stood in line, and got on the phone, and booked us for the next available flight to San Jose at 10:55 AM the following morning. We started to settle in, then Ray stood in line to get us on a flight to San Francisco on standby. That might have worked if the couple in front of him had not been playing hardball to get whatever it was that they wanted. Eventually, that plane left with a few empty seats because they could not process anyone due to the irate, irrational folks right in front of Ray. I made sure that the American Airlines employees saw my dear sweet Mom and that we kept our cool. After the San Francisco flight took off, we found a somewhat warm place to spend the night, near our original gate. An American Airlines management type came to ask how Mom was doing. She wanted to know how many were in our party. That was just as Ray gave up on the standby flight. The AA manager said some other person was claiming to be responsible for Mom and demanding some assistance for her! We gave her our boarding passes and she said she would try to see what she could do for us. Eventually she got us a voucher for one room at the hotel. (List price: $439! we were unwilling to pay!) As we left the terminal, we saw that they had set up about 100 cots for the ten thousand people who were stranded for the night. We appreciated our hotel room, especially since we were the last folks to get a room. They were all sold out!

The rest of the trip home was uneventful. We were only about fourteen hours late. Nice to be in our own beds.
